The Story

So midway through the project, the Far Cry 5 team reached out. They needed help shipping their UI, badly enough that they asked for almost the whole programming team from our project. They pitched it as a one-month mandate at first. It stretched to about six.

Honestly, the job was a salvage. Optimize, harden, polish UI systems so entire features wouldn't get cut before ship. The worst offenders were the world map and the GPS HUD element, both on memory and performance. So we dug into the hot paths, restructured how map layers streamed in, and trimmed the GPS update cadence so it behaved nicely in the full gameplay mix. We also added support for Arabic languages, RTL layout, font fallback, string-direction handling end to end.

Mind you, it's the kind of mandate that doesn't look glamorous on a résumé. But honestly, it's where you learn how to parachute a team into someone else's codebase and leave it better than you found it, without breaking their rhythm.

My Contributions

  • UI Programmer support mandate, brought nearly the full project team for ~6 months (originally pitched as 1 month)
  • Optimized and hardened worst-offender UI systems (world map, GPS HUD) to keep them in the ship
  • Added Arabic language support: RTL layout, font fallback, string-direction handling
  • Cross-project mandate coordination while maintaining leadership of the primary project
